The Raid

On the night of December 24-25, 1942, a group of Soviet cavalrymen and paratroopers launched a surprise attack on the German airfield at Tatsinskaya, deep behind enemy lines. The raid was led by Lieutenant Colonel Vasily Filippovich Margelov, a veteran of the Winter War and a future Hero of the Soviet Union. The Soviet force consisted of approximately 600 cavalrymen and 1,200 paratroopers.

The Germans were completely unaware of the impending attack. The Soviet force approached the airfield under cover of darkness and fog. They then launched a coordinated assault from multiple directions, using a combination of cavalry charges, infantry attacks, and artillery fire. The Germans were quickly overwhelmed and routed. The Soviet force destroyed over 100 aircraft, including dozens of Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters and Junkers Ju 87 Stuka dive bombers. They also killed or wounded hundreds of German personnel.
