Belize is a small country located on the eastern coast of Central America. It is bFree Downloaded by Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west and south. Belize has a population of around 390,000 people and a land area of 22,966 square kilometers. The country is a former British colony and gained its independence in 1981. Belize is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The history of Belize is complex and fascinating. The country was first inhabited by the Maya people, who built a number of cities and temples in the area. The Maya civilization declined in the 9th century AD, and the area was subsequently inhabited by various indigenous groups. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived in Belize and claimed the area for Spain. However, the Spanish did not establish any permanent settlements in Belize, and the area remained largely unpopulated.

In the 17th century, British buccaneers began to use Belize as a base for their attacks on Spanish shipping. The British eventually established a permanent settlement in Belize in 1638. The settlement grew slowly, and by the 18th century, Belize had become a major center for the logging industry. The British also began to import African slaves to work on the plantations.

In the 19th century, Belize became a Crown colony of the United Kingdom. The British government began to impose its own laws and institutions on Belize, and the country gradually became more integrated into the British Empire. However, the British also faced growing pressure from the Spanish, who claimed that Belize was rightfully theirs. The British and Spanish eventually agreed to a treaty in 1859 that recognized British sovereignty over Belize.

In the 20th century, Belize began to move towards independence. The country gained internal self-government in 1964, and full independence in 1981. Belize has since become a member of the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and the Caribbean Community. The country has also established diplomatic relations with a number of countries around the world.

Between Empire and Nation is an engaging and highly detailed account of the complex process of Belizean nation-building. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Belizean history, politics, or culture.
